of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve At 365,000 acres of lands and waters,
Kachemak Bay is the largest reserve in the National Estuarine
Research Reserve System. The reserve incorporates the Bay itself,
which is an elongated embayment contiguous to the southeastern
entrance to Cook Inlet in southcentral Alaska; the Fox River
Flats, a river delta at the head of the Bay; and portions of
Kachemak Bay State Park / Alaska Wilderness Park. Research priorities
include completing an ecological characterization of the Bay,
implementing an ecological monitoring program, and understanding
the basic life histories of resident species. The reserve will
offer a variety of educational programs and activities according
